Renal Diabetic Diet

New Renal/Diabetic Disease patients will receive individual renal diabetic diet plans from renal/diabetic dietitians in their dialysis centers. In general, here are a few guidelines patients can follow:

* If you have diabetes, do not take foods that are high in sugar.

* Don't add salt to food. Use herbs and non-salt spices. Avoid salt substitutes like the plague: their main ingredient is potassium chloride.

* Limit high-quality protein foods to eight ounces (oz.) daily (one serving is three oz.). Stay away from processed cheese and salted, canned, and cured meats.

* Limit milk, yogurt, ice cream or sherbert to one ½ cup daily.

* Stay away from other high potassium (see below) and phosphorus foods.

* Consume no more than three fruit servings a day. One serving is one medium fruit or one-half cup.

* Limit vegetables to two servings daily.

* Regular margarine, mayonnaise, and cooking oils are OK.

Vegetables that are OK to consume are asparagus, beans (green), beets, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chili peppers, corn, cucumber, eggplant, greens (collard, mustard, kale), lettuce, mushrooms, onions, peas, radishes, and squash.

Patients should either avoid or consume tiny amounts of the following high potassium fruits: apricots, avocado, banana, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, kiwi, nectarines, oranges, papaya, pears (fresh), peaches (fresh), prunes, and watermelon. "No no" juices are grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and prune.
