Currently, court appearances in California will require you to use a
certified Mandarin interpreter. We currently recommend you to use
certified Mandarin Chinese interpreters whenever possible. Please see the
reasons below:
- A certified Mandarin interpreter/translator needs to pass a rigorous and
fair examination by the State of California. The Mandarin interpretation
certification exam consists of two parts: the written examination that tests
each candidate's Chinese and English literacy level, as well as an oral
examination that tests each candidate's interpretation performance.
- The oral examination of the Mandarin interpretation certification exam
tests each candidate's consecutive interpretation skills from English to
Mandarin Chinese, and from Mandarin Chinese to English, sight translation
skills from English to Mandarin Chinese, and from Simplified Chinese and
Traditional Chinese to English, as well as simultaneous interpretation skills
from English to Mandarin Chinese.
- Each certified Chinese interpreter needs to continue to re-educate
themselves and work certain hours in each year in order to fulfill the
requirements of the interpretation license.
- The prices of certified Mandarin interpreters in the US are much lower
than conference interpreters in China. In China, conference interpreters
charge about $200 to $600/hour. In the US, certified Mandarin
interpreters charge between $100/hour to $200/hour.
