About Dr. Tyler W. Tom, the Pianist in Los Angeles

Acclaimed for his poetry and magisterial command of the instrument, Los Angeles pianist Tyler W. Tom unfailingly delivers brilliance, sensitivity, and drama to his concert audience. Possessing fistfuls of technique, his voltage charged recitals are never less than electrifying. But more than just another pianist who gets the job done, Tyler captivates and draws his listeners in with his beauty of tone, generous palette of colors, and by the depth and strength of his expression, all bundled with elegance and charisma.

Tyler W. Tom, a California native born of Chinese-American parents began his piano studies at age nine in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was here he realized the rewarding experience of playing the piano. He has since gone on to perform as soloist, recitalist, and collaborative artist throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. A recent appearance brought him to the Los Angeles Convention Center where his audience consisted of marketing and promotions executives of all the major Television and Broadcast Studios worldwide. Immediately thereafter, he was simulcast in 6 different countries, including WQXR in New York City, and 105.1 K-Mozart in Los Angeles. His performances have included major music centers of New York, San Francisco, Florida, France, Singapore, Spain, and Italy.

Dr. Tom has been the recipient of many first prizes, including winner of the Los Gatos Artist Series, the Young Artist Series of Montreal, the Young Artist Guild of the MTNA, and the Fairworld Piano Competition in San Francisco. He won the audience Favorite medal in the Litchfield Competition in Connecticut. He was featured soloist as winner of the Piano Concerto Competition with the University of Southern California Symphony. In September of 2005, he appeared as recitalist on the Steinway Society Series in San Jose, California.

Dr. Tom is highly sought after for his clinics and master classes and maintains an active schedule which includes adjudicating and defining our countries young artists. His work has included concert appearances on the stages of the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, the California Association of Professional Music Teachers, and the Music Teachers National Association.

After completing his Bachelor of Music Degree at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York in 1982, Dr. Tom continued his studies at the University of Southern California, where he was awarded the June Davison Prize honoring outstanding achievement in the field of piano pedagogy. He received two graduate degrees from USC: the Master of Music in 1986, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in 1991. He was an Assistant Lecturer at USC for five years, and has also served on the faculties of Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College and Chapman University.

He resides in Altadena, California, and maintains a private studio in both Tarzana, and his Altadena home.
