About Me

I love Chinese language teaching.

Since I was young, I have been fascinated with the beauty of Chinese language and Chinese culture. The stories of Chinese characters and the rhymes of Chinese poems always struck me when I listened to them. After I grew up, I turned such a passion into Chinese creative writing and Chinese teaching. As a sophomore in college, I started to teach foreigners in Chinese language center. It is always fun to teach people growing up in the different cultures. I enjoy making friends and sharing alternative perspectives with students during Chinese teaching.

I have academic training in linguistics, cognitive psychology and instructional technology in graduate studies. Besides, Taipei Language Institute (TLI), one of the most prestigious private Chinese language institutes in the world since 1959, certificated me in Chinese teaching. (Nicholas D. Krist of New York Times, the Pulitzer Prizes winner, had studied Chinese in TLI for six months from beginner level. Then he went to China and won Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of China in 1990.) I continue teaching Chinese when pursuing my graduate study in education in University of Southern California. Several years’ diverse working experiences with Chinese Language Center, Chinese School and private tutoring enhance my confidence on teaching both children and adults of all levels. I am eager to share the enjoyment of Chinese language and culture to all of my students. Students’ comments such as “Chinese is so easy ”, “I like to learn Chinese” are always the best return I have had in Chinese teaching.

About Teaching

The greatest Chinese educator, Confucius said, “Teach students in accordance with their aptitude.” I believe in this word deeply.

With kids, I often make lesson plans which interest and motivate them the most to learn. Games and competitions is my best instructional aid when I work with children. We often play Chinese Monopoly, puzzles and so on. Kids will feel connected with Chinese world when writing a postcard to Chinese relatives or friends, making Chinese pancake and watching Chinese movies. I also encourage kids to submit for publication like Chinese newspaper World Journal in the U.S. It is high likely to be accepted and it will absolutely inspire children’s passion of writing in Chinese when they see their work published.

When working with adults, I always initialize a short discussion with students on their instructional goals (short term and long term), interests and hobbies at the beginning of tutoring. We set up timeline and progress chart together and will check the progress every month to see where we are and how much effort we have put into learning. In addition to textbook, I can pick supplemental materials according to students’ interest to meet students’ individual needs the best.
