Armenian Language

The Armenian language is an Indo-European language spoken by the Armenian people. It is the official language of the Republic of Armenia as well as in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The language is also widely spoken by Armenian communities in the Armenian diaspora. It has its own script, the Armenian alphabet.

Major Dialects of Armenian Language

The major division is between the Eastern and Western dialects. The most distinctive feature of Western Armenian is that it has undergone several phonetic mergers; these may be due to proximity to Arabic and Turkish-speaking communities.

• Eastern Armenian: Eastern Armenian is one of the two dialects of modern Armenian (an Indo-European language). It is spoken in the Caucasus Mountains (particularly in the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh as well as Georgia) and by the Armenian community in Iran. Due to migrations of speakers from Armenia and Iran to the Armenian Diaspora, it is now very prominent in what used to be exclusively Western Armenian strongholds. It was developed in the early 19th century and is based on the dialect of the Ararat district (of Russian Armenia).
• Western Armenian: Western Armenian is one of the two modern dialects of Armenian, an Indo-European language spoken by the Armenian diaspora, mainly in North America and South America, Europe and most of the Middle East except for Iran. It is also spoken by the Armenian community in Turkey. It was developed in the early part of the 19th century, and is based on the Armenian dialect of Istanbul.

Armenian Language in the United States

In the United States, California (mainly Los Angeles, in the cities of Glendale and Burbank), New York, and New Jersey are the three states where Armenian is spoken the most.  In California, Los Angeles is the county where Armenian speaking population is the greatest.  Thus, we are now providing Armenian translators in Los Angeles.
