|What is Lust?
Lust is any controlling desire, which becomes an obsession.
In James 1:14, the Weymouth Bible puts it like this "But when a man is tempted, it is his own passions (lust) that carry him away and serve as a bait." (Comment into bracket is mine).
Nature of Lust
Lust can be sexual, greed, love of money, gossip to mention but a few. Lust in itself isn't a sin, itís a bait. As a bait leads/entices the fish into the hook, so will lust always lead to sin and there is no way you will discover you have lust until it starts leading you astray. E.g. It is not until you find yourself picking other peoples money that you realize you have a lust problem in this area.
Lust is that corrupt police officer at the entrance of your soul through whom the devil bribes his way. Lust is a device the devil uses to terrorize children of God. With it he (Satan) knows where and when to get you. It is like a bird let out of the cage and allowed to fly thinking that it is finally free but little does it know there is a string tied to its leg so that the captor will pull it back at will. So you may preach, sing, give and do all sought of wonderful ministry but there is one desire that always, always leads you a stray.
Have you ever suffered from Athletes Foot? You get an urge to scratch anticipating relief but the results are always more pain. Likewise, lust promises relief but when you consent there is guilt, regret and low self-esteem. Since lust is an agent of Satan, it will promise company and support but after you have fallen into sin it quickly withdraws and you are left to suffer the consequences alone. Lust particularly targets our joy of salvation therefore weakening us for the joy of the Lord is our strength.
Overcoming Lust
Firstly, you cannot overcome lust by your efforts alone. you need to invite the Shepherd of your soul- the Holy Spirit for it is not by power nor by might but by the (Lord's) Spirit.
Dealing with lust is like dealing with fire. No matter how small a fire is, it cannot be satisfied. The way to put out the fire is but not fuelling it. That is how lust is; it will plead for one more fueling but donít listen to that deceit. Starve it and it will be dead. To do this, identify the areas that fuel your lust e.g. books you read, programs you watch, discussions you participate in, people you spend time with, e.t.c.
It may not be a one-day process so don't lose heart, God will eventually honor your dedication. Have a Lust-free Season!
