a new economic power (China) was emerging, and its effects were shown in two ways:

• American stores suddenly seemed to be filled with goods made in
China—and not just t-shirts and sneakers.

• While Americans were buying Chinese, China was buying raw materials
produced anywhere—Saudi Arabia, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe or
wherever people produced oil and metals.
